Funky Llama 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon
March 19th, 2007
Give a wine a silly name, then drink.
There seems to be many wines of late with whimsical names; Fat Bastard, Roaming Goats, Kangaroo Parts, Jackaroo, and more. While these names are a bit silly I do think it’s a great way to take away much of the mystery and pompousness surrounding wine.
This was one of the wines we rated during a blind tasting during the first Friday of March 2007. We came to the consensus that this wine was just ok. Nothing about it is very memorable, if it’s a good deal in your area then pick it up, otherwise I’d pass on it.
A spicy nose, very subtle. Medium-smooth mouth feel, lite and easy. Perhaps a subtle oak, but nothing bold you would expect in a Cabernet. The finish is dry, a slight metallic hint, but overall flat finish hiding much of the berry. This wine is good, but leaves you wanting something a bit more complex.

Good taste and inexpensive! I’m a frequent shopper at Trader Joe’s. There always seem to be something new and interesting every time I visit. One drawback is that it makes going to the grocery store around the corner a very dull experience. My recent find at Trader Joe’s is a Chilean wine, San Andres Cabernet [...]... - Jacob’s Creek Cabernet Sauvignon 2003
So Australia Can have mediocre wine? Yes, it can! This wine is so-so, especially when compared with all the good Cabernet Sauvignons I’ve been drinking in the past few weeks. Anything unusual about this wine is not positive. If you’re in the store, looking for a good Australian wine (wich isn’t hard to do), I [...]... - Black Opal Cabernet Merlot 2005
The boss is really ridin me. Drink more wine he says. Work nights, weekends, and holidays; just get it done. As a professional, I will devote my efforts to the cause and provide our readers with informative meaningless opinions. At $7.99, I thought this little gal was a little pricy to take out on the [...]... - Jacobs Creek 2004 Shiraz Cabernet
Why did I buy this? This is a combo of both Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, 53% and 47% respectively. Perhaps they should have made up their mind and stuck with that. I’m thinking they needed to drown out a bad batch of Cabernet with some Shiraz. The appearance is light red, very light, looking very [...]... - Foxbrook 2005 Shiraz
Whaddabargin, yup it’s great and it’s dirt cheap, $3.99. You don’t even have to travel to Trader Joe’s to find this deal, but you may have to find a specialty grocer in your area. Out of 3 wines sampled in a blind tasting last Friday night, this was the stand out winner. 3 out of [...]...

sorry, can’t comment on an arizona distributor, but I can comment on funky llama and its 2008 batch of cab. which is to say, don’t waste your time looking for it. I love a good, cheap find… but this is not one. the ’05 cab was flat, but this one is even flatter and more metallic. the nose, if you can find it, is spicy with a hint of tire. maybe they’ve cut costs? a once passable “gallery opening wine” is currently just a “crap wine”. you’ll be much better off with a new wave box wine.
